Project Description:
In Canada, a 20% reduction in wheat, barley, canola, and dry bean fertilization will reduce CO2-equivalent emissions by up to 2.56 Mt/year, save farmers >$2.1 billion/year in costs, and allow them to meet mandated targets under Canada’s Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act. This project will support further development of the inoculant industry in Canada, which is expected to reach a global value of >$6 billion by 2029, while increasing food security by reducing reliance on imported inputs. Our interdisciplinary team has all expertise required to achieve our deliverables, and comprises investigators at all career stages including 6 team members experienced with Genome Canada projects. Deliverables were developed with end-users, including an inoculant producer and grower organizations collectively representing 42,000 members who participated in research design and will leverage our deliverables to benefit Canadians and reduce the climate impact of Canada’s food production systems.
