Project Description:
Using a multi-pronged omics approach, we will ACTIVATE genomics to decrease GHG emissions in crop production. To reduce the environmental footprint of agriculture, including decreased GHG emissions, we will develop and apply innovative strategies to multiple species with the aim to develop new varieties that a) are resilient in the face of changing climate, b) require less synthetic N, and c) are more efficient at translating CO2 into grain yield. To achieve this, we will apply genomic strategies that result in reduced N2O emissions in wheat and develop a multi-species genomic-based breeding strategy over time and space that mitigates the carbon footprint of Canadian agriculture. We will simultaneously implement digital phenotyping technologies and develop the necessary decision support tools –for plant breeders and producers –to enable increased selection efficiency and rates of genetic gain. Our proposed research is strategic and leverages our expertise in cereal and pulse genomic and plant breeding to ensure translation of results into new, climate-smart varieties. Our integrated GE3LS research will valuate producer and societal benefits of climate-efficient crop rotations and address the key question of how Plant Breeders and Producers may be incentivized to adopt new, reduced-emissions production systems
